Cranberry beans

Not that I’m complaining, but it’s been an unusually mild summer, such that our farmer’s market trip today was a little. . . unseasonal.   We bought chard, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, standard tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, squash, and herbs (mint and basil).   The most difficult to find were the chard (to be expected, as it’s August), the eggplant, and the tomatoes (not to be expected, as it’s August).

We also spotted something I wasn’t expecting to see quite yet: cranberry beans.

I bought some cranberry beans on a whim last year because they were pretty.   I didn’t really expect much; I’m not a fan of beans, but Matt likes them, so we figured it was worth a try.   The internets revealed a Jamie Oliver recipe of beans on toast, again not my thing, but Matt thought it sounded good, so again, worth a try.

It’s surprisingly delicious, and we gorged on it last year as long as cranberry beans were available.   I’ve decided that my problem is not with beans per se, but rather with canned beans — I don’t like the texture.   I love these fresh, though, and Matt and I did some cooking last year with dried beans, and I liked those, too.

Anyhow, I scooped up these when I (well, Matt, really) saw them at the market today, and we had beans on toast for dinner.

Here’s hoping for a long and fruitful (so to speak) bean season.
